Tamil Nadu CM launches ‘Education TV’ channel

The channel will telecast various programmes, including rhymes, songs and video lessons, career guidance programmes and coaching classes for competitive exams such as NEET and JEE.


In the first phase, it will telecast programmes from 6 am to 9.30 pm. Speaking at the launch event at Anna Centenary Library, Palaniswami said, “The channel will telecast programmes relevant to students studying in LKG to Class XII. Interviews of best teachers, question and answer sessions with experts, discoveries of government

school

students and interaction with educationists will feature in the channel.” “Complaints by parents that children who watch TV do not study will now change,” he added. He urged the students to watch useful programmes on Education TV instead of seeing other programmes, spending time on cellphones and social media. School education minister K A Sengottaiyan said it was a first such initiative undertaken by a state government and it would be a big boost for students.

The channel will also telecast programmes on sports events, training and awareness programmes for parents. It will be available on channel 200 on Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV (TACTV).

“Nearly 50% of our programmes will be based on school syllabus and the remaining will focus on inculcating values, discipline and environmental awareness. Coaching classes for various competitive exams like NEET and JEE also will be telecast,” an official said.

The content was prepared by a team of teachers with the help of State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

The channel started telecasting on Monday. The inaugural function was edited and telecast to government high and higher secondary schools in the evening. “The telecast of programmes will begin in a few days as we are shooting our back up. The telecast will likely to start on September 5,” another official said. During the first phase, a total of 32 programmes will be telecast.

School children performed Bharatnatyam, ballet and “therukoothu” (street theatre) at the event.

Deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, chief secretary K Shanmugam and school education secretary Pradeep Yadav also spoke.

Unique World Record presented an award to the state government for launching the first education channel in Tamil.
