Chennai: India and the United States have a joint role in protecting the world order, peace and democracy from rising forces that are disturbing the established order, Tamil Nadu governor R N Ravi said on Thursday.
The governor was speaking at the 37th annual convocation ceremony of VIT Vellore, after conferring honorary doctorate on Sethuraman Panchanathan, an Indian origin scientist and director of National Science Foundation (NSF) in the US.
“In recent years, we have seen a country, which is rising in a way that is disturbing the established order. They are hegemonist in their outlook, approach and relationship. They seek to encroach the globe of commons, the common space which is for the whole of humanity. They are trying to make it as if it is theirs,” he said, adding that this has posed a serious problem to the world order.
The governor said they have spread their economy and trapped their neighbouring countries with their influence making it difficult for them to come out, heavily compromising their sovereignty and strategic autonomy. “This kind of a global order is unacceptable,” he said.
The governor’s comments come at a time when there are growing national strategic concerns over a Chinese research vessel docking at the Sri Lankan Hambantota port. There have also been security concerns over the presence of Chinese vessels in the Indian ocean.
The governor congratulated the 8,383 students who graduated from the VIT’s Vellore campus on Thursday. Among those present at the event were VIT chancellor G Vishwanathan, vice-presidents Sankar Viswanathan, Sekar Viswanathan, G V Selvam and assistant vice-president Kadhambari S Viswanathan. US counsel-general Judith Ravin also congratulated the students.
