Kallakurichi school student’s death: AIDWA members protest near DGP office in Chennai, detained

CHENNAI: Members of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) on Thursday protested near the DGP office in Chennai demanding that police speed up investigation into the death of a Class XII student at Kaniyamur in Kallakurichi district in July. Police removed the protesters and detained around 60 of them in a marriage hall in Mylapore.

The girl student was found dead on the school campus on July 13. A protest held in front of the school on July 17 turned violent. The protesters torched the school buildings and vehicles.

The student’s death case was transferred to the CB-CID while a special investigation team is probing three other cases registered in connection with the violence.

Five people, including school administrator Ravikumar and his wife Shanthi, were arrested in connection with the girl’s death. Later, they were released on bail.

The AIDWA on Thursday protested near the DGP office demanding that police expedite trial in the case and slap sections of the POCSO Act on the suspects. They wanted the cops to move court for cancelling the bail granted to the suspects. They also demanded that the state government provide adequate relief to the student's kin and provide a government job to a family member.

Around 50 protesters gathered near Kalyani Hospital on the Dr Radhakrishnan Salai. They marched towards the DGP office. Police stopped them near Citi Centre mall. Another group of protesters were stopped near Kannagi Statue.

The protesters were led by AIDWA vice-president U Vasuki. The protest affected traffic on the Dr Radhakrishnan Salai. Police removed the protesters, including Vasuki, and detained them.
