CHENNAI: Drinking liquor may be injurious to a person's health, but allowing people to guzzle it out of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles hurts the environment, a PIL plea on Thursday.

Used glass bottle wholesale dealer S Prathab, moving the PIL, asked the court to quash a June 19, 1996 government order allowing manufacturers of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) brands to use PET bottles.

A bench of Justice M S Ramesh and Justice

G R Swaminathan

issued a notice to the government and the

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board

, returnable by January 8.

The petitioner said more than 11 states already restrict the use of PET bottles and argued for a similar policy in Tamil Nadu. The bench refused to pass an interim order but issued notices and directed the government to file its response in an affidavit.
