Madras high court dismisses plea challenging 'A' certificate for Rajinikanth's 'Coolie'
CHENNAI: In a setback to the makers of the movie 'Coolie' starring actor Rajinikanth, the Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a plea challenging the decision of the CBFC in issuing an 'A' certificate to the film.
The movie's producer, Sun TV Network, wanted the court to direct the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate for the film so that children could be allowed to watch it.
Noting that the petition moved by the producer lacked merit, Justice T V T V Thamil Selvi dismissed the plea.
The company added that the CBFC issued an 'A' certificate even after the removal of obscene words, masking of liquor-consuming scenes, and adherence to all other conditions stipulated by the board.
Opposing the plea, the CBFC submitted that while the film crew initially accepted the 'A' certificate, they have now filed a petition seeking a U/A certificate. The decision to issue an 'A' certificate was taken unanimously by all members of the board, and if a U/A certificate is sought, all the violent scenes should have been removed, the board said.

According to the petitioner, since the film was given an 'A' certificate, people under 18 years of age could not watch it. Pointing out the reasoning of the CBFC that the movie contains more violent action sequences, the producer contended that no Tamil movie can be made without action sequences. The company added that the CBFC issued an 'A' certificate even after the removal of obscene words, masking of liquor-consuming scenes, and adherence to all other conditions stipulated by the board.
