City commuters

had a rough time getting any where on Monday as

heavy rains

and

gusty winds

made vehicle movement increasingly sporadic. While few autos and cabs took to the roads, it was the MTC that braved the storm, ferrying people across the city.

Though the bus service faced interruptions, white board and deluxe buses were spotted till late evening. Buses like 47 A and 29 C were running with considerable frequency save for a break between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm when the cyclone intensified before making landfall.

An MTC official told TOI that after the rains stopped, the corporation worked on bus route roads on a priority to clear the way for buses. This included major roads like Anna Salai, Poonamallee high road etc.

A lot of work ensued as several bus shelters were damaged. In Vadapalani, several trees fell on the road, affecting services, said a senior MTC officer.
