CHENNAI: Police are yet to get a breakthrough in the February 10 heist at a showroom in North Chennai's Peravallur in which the suspects decamped with 4.5 crore worth of gold and diamond jewellery.

Six special teams of police have fanned out to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Bengaluru in search of the suspects.

The four-member gang which escaped in an SUV with the booty used a forged registration number plate. Police tracked the car abandoned by the gang members in Andhra Pradesh.

A police team led by joint commissioner of police R V Ramya Bharathi are trying to track down the suspects. The team which browsed several CCTV camera footage tracked the SUV crossing Karanodai toll plaza near Red Hills and heading towards Andhra Pradesh.

Inquiries revealed that the accused used a portable gas welding unit to cut open the shop's shutter and the safe where the owner kept expensive gold and diamond jewellery.

The gang broke into JL Gold Palace on Paper Mills Road at Agaram Main Road junction in the wee hours on Saturday. Based on the showroom owner J Sridhar's complaint, police have registered a case.
