Revenge killing: AIADMK man killed in Puducherry

CUDDALORE: An AIADMK functionary from Cuddalore was hacked to death by a gang in Puducherry in the early hours of Sunday.

Police said they suspect the killing of R Padmanabhan, 49. to be a case of retaliatory attack as Padmanabhan was accused of murdering another person in Cuddalore.

Padmanabhan, a native of Tirupapuliyur in Cuddalore district and a ward secretary of AIADMK, had gone to participate in a cultural programme conducted as part of a temple festival in a village close to Tamil Nadu - Puducherry border on Saturday night.

He was returning to Cuddalore around 6.30 am when a gang in a car started chasing him near Puducherry border. "The gang dashed their car against Padmanabhan's motorcycle. As he lost control and fell down, the gang members got down from the car and hacked him to death," a police officer said.

The gang members then fled from the spot. Passersby informed police, who visited the spot and sent the body for postmortem.

Police said Padmanabhan was arrested for the murder of Baskar, also from Cuddalore, in August last year. He was later released on bail. "We suspect that the murder could be a revenge attack for the death of Baskar," police said, adding that they have picked up two men from Navaneeth Nagar, the native place of Baskar, for questioning.
