CHENNAI: A police sub-inspector attached to the Velachery station was stabbed by a man when he went to nab him for barging into a house and attacking a woman.

The injured officer has been admitted to a private hospital and the arrested sent to jail.

Police said the suspect was identified as Sathish of Velachery. Last year, Sathish's sister Shalini married Veeramani from a different community.

"Sathish was not happy about it and used to create a ruckus with Veeramani often. On January 22, he had stolen 2g of gold from his sister's house," said an investigation officer.

Shalini who initially lodged a complaint later withdrew it saying her brother was responsible for the theft. Later, on January 30, Sathish abused Veeramani with casteist slurs and attacked a woman family member," said a senior police officer.

Shalini and Veeramani lodged a complaint at the Velachery police station. Police inspector Chandra Mohan asked sub-inspector Arun to pick up Sathish from his house for an inquiry.

The sub-inspector reached the Velachery housing board to nab Sathish. However, his relatives who were present in the house prevented Arun from entering it.

While there was a tussle between the relatives and Arun, Sathish stabbed the SI under his right arm with a kitchen knife and escaped. Arun informed the police station and was rushed to a hospital.

Meanwhile, a group of police personnel went to the house and detained four people who were involved in the scuffle and attacked Arun. Meanwhile, police nabbed Sathish from a hideout in the city.

He was arrested and a magistrate court in the city sent him to Puzhal prison. Police are searching for the others involved in the attack. Further investigations are on.
