CHENNAI: Chennai remains cut off from southern parts of Tamil Nadu as several stretches of national highways are flooded. Train services have been severely affected, with several cancellations and Chennai-bound trains diverted via Arakkonam, resulting in delays of six to eight hours.

The Chennai-Trichy National Highway was blocked at multiple locations in Villupuram district on Monday, with the water in the river Thenpennai flowing over the road. At Iruvelpattu, knee-deep water flowed on the highway, prompting police to barricade the area and halt vehicular movement.

Four-wheelers coming from Madurai and Trichy have been advised to return, leaving many vehicles stranded on highway. Government buses have been advised to take a detour.

Transport minister S S Sivasankar announced deployment of 100 special buses to assist passengers stranded at Villupuram railway station, where trains were halted due to flooding at a bridge in the Vikravandi-Mundiyambakkam section.

Southern Railway officials have indicated that services on the affected section are expected to resume by 5 pm on Monday, offering some hope for stranded passengers.

The East Coast Road is also flooded at multiple locations.
