Tamil Nadu transport workers unions announce bus strike ahead of Pongal
CHENNAI: Ahead of Pongal, government bus services in Tamil Nadu are likely to be affected from January 9 as transport workers' unions in the state have announced an indefinite strike.
The unions had placed six major demands, including better pay (15th wage revision agreement), filling of vacant bus driver and conductor posts, financial support from the state government to all eight state-run transport corporations and releasing pending dearness allowances of pensioners.
The second round of talks between unions and transport authorities that was held in Chennai on Wednesday failed. "They (officials) once again sought more time. We were not satisfied with their reply," A Soundararajan, CITU leader, told reporters here on Wednesday after attending the meet.

when transport corporation is facing huge revenue loss, why they are offering free tickets to all the female... several times I found the males are standing in the running bus while free ticket holders - female are sitting and enjoying like tour bus and laughing the standing male passengers who hold tickets by paying money and some time the female are quarreling with conductor and driver by using ugly words..So when the government wish to find out the feasible solution for solving the revenue issues of the transport staffs which includes the paucity of the fund , you should look into the affair of free tickets also...And further simply hike the passenger ticket is not the proper solution. That too, once in a way you are hiking the tickets fares abruptly without asking the commuters view...whatever it be, you should fill up the vacancies if it is necessary and urgent..postpone the pay hike for time being....Release the fund for the pension arrears somewhat...Try to find out how to mobilize the fund to come out from the financial issues...There are lot of ways...where there is a will there is a way...but strike should not be under any circumstances...
