CHENNAI: Two people died, and 23 others were hospitalised in Pallavaram on Thursday after allegedly drinking contaminated water. However, minister T M Anbarasan, who visited the affected areas, said the deaths could have been due to food poisoning and not due to drinking contaminated water.

The victims complained of severe health issues such as vomiting and diarrhoea and were admitted to Chromepet Govt Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Mohanarangan, 42, of Pallavaram and Thiruveedhi, 54, of Kamarajapuram.

Mohanarangan, who complained of chest pain, was brought dead. "We don't know the cause of death. He hails from the area from where 23 other patients came with complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting. Sixteen have been admitted. They are being treated for acute diarrhoeal disorder," hospital chief medical officer Dr Palanivel said. The condition of all the patients was stable, he added.

The residents of ward 13 said they had alerted the authorities about water discolouration, but nothing had been done until people started falling sick.

Authorities launched an investigation into the incident. They collected water samples for testing.
