Will install more CCTV cameras, streetlights on campus, says min

Chennai: Following the sexual assault of a student at Anna University, higher education minister Govi Chezhiaan on Friday said the state govt will improve security on Anna University campus by installing more CCTV cameras and streetlights on the campus.After inspecting the campus and discussing with university officials, Govi Chezhiaan said 80% of CCTV cameras are working within the campus. He also said the university will impose a curb on entering campus after college hours for outsiders.Calling the incident unfortunate and unexpected, the minister said police arrested the accused in a short time. "We will extend full cooperation to police and National Commission for Women to inquire about the incident. Those who do not have any other issues are trying to politicise it," Chezhiaan added.Later, he asked all colleges to direct girl students to download the "Kavalan Udhavi" app on their mobile phones. "It will help them during emergency situations. When the students press the red button, it would immediately share location and other details with the police control room," he said in a statement. He also said the Prevention of Sexual Harassment committees are in place in all educational institutions and the complaints received by this committee would be periodically reviewed.
