COIMBATORE: Two people were arrested on Thursday for trying to extort a car from its owner. The Saravanampatti (crime) police identified the arrested as H Azaruddin, 32, of Pon Vizha Nagar at Ukkadam, and M Allauddin, 39, of Cheran Nagar at Karumbukadai.

According to a police officer, M Mahendran, 30, of Poovalavappur in Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, handed over his car to the two after his brother’s friend Prasanth, of Saravanampatti, took him into confidence that they would pay him Rs 25,000 every month.

Mahendran handed over the car to the duo on July 26 this year, but they defaulted on the payment from August. When Mahendran approached them for the payment, the duo refused and threatened him with dire consequences. Meanwhile, the duo pledged the car to Sundarapandian, of Thanjavur, for Rs 2.5 lakh.

‘The two then demanded Rs 3.5 lakh from Mahendran to return his car,” the officer said. Mahendran subsequently approached the Saravanamaptti police inspector Sangeetha and team, who registered a case against the two on Wednesday and arrested Azaruddin and Allauddin on Thursday. Police also recovered the car from them.
