TIRUPUR: A special team of the city police on Friday arrested two accused involved in a series of
chain-snatching
and robberies in the past one year and recovered more than 80 sovereigns from the duo.
One of them is reportedly involved in 25 chain-snatching cases so far. The accused were identified as G Jagadeesan, 36, of Kulamanickam Anthony Church Street in Ariyalur, and D Naveen Kumar, 23, of 15 Velampalayam in Tirupur.
“During the police investigations, the accused confessed that they had involved in nine chain-snatching incidents in the city and rural police limits, four in 15 Velampalayam, three in Tirupur north, one each in Tirupur rural (city police) and Avinashi, all in this year,” said a police official.
The investigations further revealed that Jagadeesan, who was temporarily residing at Kuppandapalayam near Avinashi, was the mastermind behind all their criminal activities. Their modus operandi was that while Jagadeesan would ride the motorbike, Naveen would ride pillion. The former would snatch the chains despite handling the vehicle, said the official.
“Jagadeesan was found to have been facing chain-snatching cases in many places including Trichy. Fortunately, we could nab him, it was a big breakthrough,” he added.
The accused were produced before judicial magistrate III before being remanded in judicial custody. Later, they were lodged at the Coimbatore central prison.
Meanwhile, the Uthukuli police on Thursday arrested two accused during a vehicle inspection in the district. P Malaisamy, 52, of Padiyur and
G Varghese
, 50 of Thirussur, were the two arrested. They were found have to been involved in two house break-in incidents - one at Uthukuli and other at Vellakoil.
Police recovered 31.5 sovereigns from them. Varghese is a habitual offender, who has many criminal cases including a murder case against him in Kerala.
