Tirupur: The Palladam police arrested two men on Saturday for murdering an elderly woman for gold ornaments at Karanampettai here on October 18. With this, the number of people arrested in the case has gone up to five.
A police officer identified the arrested duo as A Baskar, 25, and M Maheswaran, 23, both natives of Ambasamuthiram in Tirunelveli district.
The Palladam police had arrested A Karuthapandi, 27, P Esakkimuthu, 41, and K Esakkimuthu, 27, all natives of Ambasamuthirapuram in Tirunelveli district, in connection with the case on October 22. The trio were later lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.
The officer said the five had murdered S Kannammal, 70, of Trichy Road at Karanampettai near Palladam on the night of October 17 and stolen gold ornaments weighing 15 sovereigns from her house.
"They had tied her legs and hands with clothes, and gagged her with a towel. They also sprayed red chilli powder on her face and at the crime scene. We registered a case formed five special teams to nab the murderers," the officer said.
He said the mastermind behind the crime was Baskar. "He was working with a hotel at Karanampettai. He came to know that Kannammal was living alone. As she had rented out a few shops in the locality, Baskar thought she might have been in possession of a huge amount of money and gold ornaments, and roped in the remaining four to commit the burglary."
Police have recovered the stolen gold ornaments and seized the car used for committing the crime from the arrested people.
