COIMBATORE: A 56-year-old man from Kerala was trampled to death by a wild elephant in a forest area near Anaikatti in Coimbatore district.
The decomposed body of M Mayilan of Palakkad district in Kerala was found in the Kolikandimoolai area of the Anaikatti forest on Tuesday.
According to the Thadagam police, Mayilan came to Anaikatti on March 15 to visit his son, M Manikandan, 25, who studies at a private college there. Mayilan did not return home after visiting his son. Manikandan filed a missing person complaint with the Thadagam police.
On March 23, forest department personnel on patrol in the Anaikatti forest spotted a man’s decomposed body and alerted the Thadagam police.
Police visited the spot and conducted investigations. Manikandan identified it as his father’s body.
Police found elephant footprints at the site where the body was found. Investigations revealed that Mayilan had suffered severe injuries consistent with an elephant attack.
The Thadagam police registered a case. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
