Stadium exclusively for cops to come up in Chennai at a cost of 10cr: DGP

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal said an exclusive stadium for police personnel would be constructed at a cost of 10 crore in Chennai.Addressing the valedictory function of the 63rd Tamil Nadu State Police Inter Zonal Athletic, Cycling and Kho-Kho Cluster -2023 at the Nehru Stadium in the city on Friday, Shankar Jiwal said, “The Tamil Nadu police will soon be conducting a national-level horse riding event for the first time in its history in the state.”Shankar participated as a chief guest at the function.Shankar said, “The police department has good athletes and sports players. But we don’t have experts to coach our police personnel, who actively participate in several sports events. We can hire some good coaches to train our police personnel. We have enough talent. We can get many medals in national-level events.”He said the state government has agreed to bear the expenses for 10 police personnel to get training at the National Institute of Sports.“Players from the police department who qualify for the national-level sports meets should be given standardised sports kits. We must give quality shoes, medicine kits, and all other needed items to the national-level players. We are planning to set up a stadium at a cost of 10 crore in Chennai, and all the facilities will be created at the stadium,” Shankar said.“Sportspersons should give more attention to their injuries. Many players do not bother about their injuries and fail to get proper treatment. Rest and recuperation are important for players to overcome sports injuries. If they fail to treat sports injuries properly, they cannot perform well in the coming years,” the DGP said.Additional director general of police (armed police) HM Jayaram, inspector general of police S Lakshmi and other police officers participated in the valedictory function.The inter-zonal sports meet began on Wednesday and 687 police personnel from nine zones – Greater Chennai Police (GCP), Avadi, Tambaram, Central, North, South, West Zone police, Tamil Nadu Commando Force, and Armed Police participated in the sports events. As many as 158 cops won gold medals, 151 won silver, and 149 won bronze.Sixteen new records were created in the inter-zonal sports meet. Of them, 12 records were created by women police personnel. R Varsha attached to the Greater Chennai police (GCP) created a record in 100 metre running by completing the stretch in 14.6 seconds. Another woman cop Anupriya from CGP created two records in the sports meet.All the 16 record-holders were rewarded.
