CUTTACK: Orissa high court on Monday admitted a petition challenging the election of BJP MLA Laxman Bag from Kantabanji assembly constituency.
Bag defeated former chief minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik by a margin of 16,344 votes from Kantabanji.
Giriraj Singh Majhi, a voter of the constituency, has sought quashing of Bag’s election on the ground of improper acceptance of his nomination papers by the returning officers despite non-compliance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and Rules 1961.
Taking on record advocate Milan Kanungo’s submissions on Majhi’s behalf, the single-judge bench issued notice to Bag for filing of written statement for settlement of issues and posted the matter on Aug 27 for further consideration.
