Ghaziabad family’s ‘destination wedding’ at Almora cremation ground sparks massive row

BAGESHWAR: A destination wedding at a riverside cremation site in Uttarakhand’s Almora district has triggered outrage, prompting the administration to order a probe and issue notice to the resort management that facilitated the event.
The ceremony took place on April 25 at the confluence of the Ramganga and Badangad rivers in Marchula area of Salt block near Jim Corbett National Park.
Traditionally used for last rites, the ghat was decorated by a couple from Ghaziabad for their wedding rituals, including the exchange of garlands. At least 50 people had gathered and loud music blared in the area close to the national park.
Images and videos of the event circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism from locals and social organisations, who called it insensitive and disrespectful to cultural traditions. Social activist Narayan Singh Rawat stressed that cremation grounds hold deep spiritual significance and are inappropriate for celebratory events.
Tehsildar Abid Ali said prior administrative approval is mandatory for public events, which was not obtained in this case. He also highlighted safety concerns, as the area is crocodile-prone.
The administration has initiated an inquiry after serving notice to the resort. Manager Rakesh Sharma said organisers were informed about the site’s nature but they chose to proceed with the rituals.
Officials observed that Uttarakhand’s growing popularity as a destination wedding hub, coupled with a lack of clear guidelines, risks similar controversies.
The incident has renewed calls to balance tourism promotion with respect for local customs and sensitivities.
