NAINITAL: In an operation that involved 50 personnel, including those from the forest department and police, an injured tigress was rescued from Kota range of Ramnagar forest division in the vicinity of Corbett Tiger Reserve on Monday. The three-year-old big cat, which is expected to have internal injuries, has been kept under observation in Ranibagh Rescue Center.

Parag Madhukar Dhakate, conservator of Western Circle, said, “The tigress had been sighted in the past two days after which a rescue operation was launched. The big cat has responded well to feeding after the rescue.”

The rescue operation involved 50 people, including forest personnel, a veterinary officer, police and other officials. Fifty camera traps and two cages had also been set up.

Yogesh Bhardwaj, senior veterinary officer at Pt G B Pant High Altitude Zoo in Nainital, who was involved in the operation said, “We did not tranquillize the tigress as it was quite weak. The animal showed symptoms of dehydration. We expect it has internal injuries. A medical examination will reveal further details. ”

Neha Verma, divisional forest officer, Ramnagar division, who headed the operation told TOI, “The animal will be release into the wild once it has recovered.”

Ramnagar forest division has reported seven tiger deaths in just four months of the year. The causes have ranged from territorial infighting to alleged poisoning to hunger.
