According to chief executive officer (CEO) of the board, Syed Shiraz Hussain, ever since the board was constituted in 2003, only records of rental income from waqf properties have been kept but no audit of donations has been done. Besides, none of the committees have submitted an audit report.

"Notices have been sent to all waqf bodies asking them to maintain records of all donations received, including monetary contributions, for maintenance of mosques or graveyards, and submit audit reports. The purpose is to maintain a record of their income, expenditure and assets. Appropriate action would be initiated against defaulters," the CEO said.

Hussain added that there are a total of 2,050 waqf committees in the state, out of which 500 are registered. Of these, around 250 committees are involved in financial transactions in the form of donations, rent and other sources of income. As per the rules, each committee has to deposit 7% of donations -- 6% in the state waqf board and 1% in the central waqf board -- along with an annual audit report.
