UP police team attacked in Haridwar while arresting forgery accused; 11 booked

HARIDWAR: A police team from Uttar Pradesh was attacked in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday while arresting an accused in connection with a property forgery case. A case has been registered against 11 individuals, including the accused's son, and three accused have been arrested so far.

Police said the incident took place when a team from Muzaffarnagar district arrived at Jawalapur in Haridwar to arrest the accused. "A team of four police personnel – including a female constable – reached Jawalapur police station to arrest Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Subhash Nagar," Jawalapur SHO Kundan Singh Rana told TOI.


Rana said that after taking Sanjay into custody, the accused allegedly made a phone call to his son, asking him to intercept the police. "When they were moving towards UP, Sanjay's son Ishant, chased the police car and stopped them near Ranipur Jhaal on Haridwar-Delhi highway. Ishant and his associates repeatedly rammed the police car and tried to free his father," said Rana.

Police said the attack continued until local Haridwar police reached the spot and intervened, allowing the UP police team to move to safety.

Based on a complaint by police, a case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 132 (assault or criminal force against a public servant), 191(2) (rioting), 324(4) (mischief), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of BNS.

"Ishant and his associates Shivam Malik and Aman have been arrested, while the other accused are absconding," the SHO said.
