NEW DELHI: Two women IPS officers with Delhi Police have been attached with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to assist in the investigation of the cases pertaining to the violence in Manipur.
The probe agency had earlier asked the police commissioner of Delhi to loan four officers to join the special investigation team (SIT).
An order issued by the police chief's office reads: "This is in response to the Ministry of Home Affairs letter dated August 18. I am directed to state that following officers have been nominated by Delhi Police and their services are placed at the disposal of CBI for the purpose of investigation into the FIRs related to Manipur violence."
The order names IPS officer Harendra Kumar and inspector Parveen Kumar and two senior women officers of deputy commissioner rank - Esha Pandey and Shweta Chauhan.
CBI had initially formed a 53-member team, headed by two women DIGs, to investigate the violence against women in Manipur. Later, more officers were added to the team as the number of cases rose and around 83 officers are part of the SIT now, sources said.
The probe agency is investigating about a dozen FIRs, including the case of alleged sexual assault on two women by a mob in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on May 4. A video of the incident caused nationwide uproar.
The FIRs pertaining to the crime against the women has been filed under sections of abduction, gangrape, murder and use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty. CBI had sought custody of the suspects apprehended by Manipur Police in the case to interrogate them afresh.
Besides the police officers, a senior special psychiatrist, a specialist (psychiatry) and one psychologist from the district hospital in Churachandpur have been deputed to assist the victims.
CBI's probe had begun in the aftermath of the Centre filing an affidavit before the Supreme Court, submitting that the probe into the incident will be conducted by the central probe agency. Chargesheets will be filed in the cases soon, a senior officer said.
