2nd cutoff makes colleges more accessible; 32% of seats filled
New Delhi: After the first day of admissions under the
Under the first cutoff list, DU had recorded around 16,000 applications. With heavy admissions on Monday, too, the number of filled seats now makes up for over 32% of the total available seats.
For most colleges, the rush picked up only with the release of the second list as crowds moved to the colleges neglected in the first list. With a drop in the second list, certain popular colleges have also become more accessible, leading to several withdrawals and migrations within the university.
Many students withdrew from the colleges where they had taken admissions just to secure a place in DU. Prachi, from Rohtak, shifted from Lady Shri Ram College after securing a berth at Shri Ram College of Commerce. “I scored 97.6% in the CBSE exams and always wanted to study BCom (H) at SRCC.”
Another aspirant, Mekhla from Lucknow’s La Martiniere School, has scored 98.25% in her ISC boards and had gone for economics (H) at LSR. “But I had always heard of SRCC and wanted to get into its economics course.” Her father, Vivek Singh, a farmer from Balrampur, said he didn’t mind staying away from work for days. “I want the best for my daughter.”
Divya Sihal, president of the Gargi students’ union, said, “Several students have withdrawn but many have also shifted from other colleges to apply here.”
In North Campus, while Miranda House saw less crowd, Daulat Ram College was brimming with activity. Most of the applicants TOI spoke to at DRC were eyeing its political science and history courses. At Miranda, several applicants said their target was a North Campus college. Anushka Srivastava, who had secured a BSc physical sciences seat in Jesus and Mary at South Campus, has shifted to Miranda with English (honours).
Off-campus colleges like Dyal Singh and Sri Ventakeswara saw several admissions as well as withdrawals.
