NEW DELHI: People residing in a slum alongside this drain in Taimoor Nagar face continuous exposure to mosquitoes, flies and various illnesses due to the waste accumulated throughout the year.

The slum is overwhelmed by extensive plastic waste.


Only on Friday, a 13-year-old boy had drowned in a similar open drain at Rajendra Nagar Extension.


Earlier, a 32-year-old man died after falling into an open drain in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura in Sept. The drain’s depth and the swift flow of water made it impossible for the locals to pull him to safety.


In Aug, a 23-year-old woman and her three-year-old son died after they allegedly fell into a waterlogged drain near the Ghazipur paper market in east Delhi. The woman was carrying her son in her arms at the time of the incident.


In another incident in the same month, a seven-year-old boy fell into an open drain while trying to relieve himself and drowned in northwest Delhi’s Ashok Vihar.
