In perhaps the deadliest fire accident in Hyderabad, 17 members of a jeweller’s family, including eight children, died after a raging inferno engulfed a three-storied building in Gulzar Houz on Sunday. Fire officials said the blaze started around 6 am at an over 100-year-old residential-cum-commercial structure, a stone’s throw from the Charminar.

The building was reduced to ruins after being engulfed for nearly three hours. While some victims suffered fatal burns, others died due to asphyxiation. The deceased were aged between 2 and 70 years. Four family members – two of whom were out on morning chores – and some workers survived. The family had gathered at their ancestral home for the weekend. Neighbours said they migrated from Rajasthan during the Nizam’s era and had been living there since.

All had severe burns and inhalation injuries,” read a statement from the hospital. Eyewitnesses described the horror: “Within no time, the entire building was up in flames. There was no hope,” said Mir Zahid, a local.
