A fire accident during a Theyyam performance at Veerarkavu Temple near Neeleswaram last night resulted in 150 injuries, including 10 serious cases, when firecrackers stored nearby exploded.

Police reported that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, although eyewitnesses indicated that sparks from the firecrackers ignited the stored explosives, causing a panic among spectators.

Nileswaram police have registered a case under the Explosive Substance Act and various sections of the BNS.

On Tuesday, Delhi experienced a surge in air pollution, with smog enveloping the city and AQI levels crossing 300 in several areas, categorizing air quality as 'very poor.' Delhi BJP leaders accused the Punjab government of failing to address stubble burning, which they say is a major contributor to the city’s pollution. They protested outside Kapurthala House, seeking to meet Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann but were unable to do so. BJP leaders criticized AAP for unfulfilled promises to control stubble burning in Punjab, calling for better coordination between Delhi and Punjab to combat rising pollution.

Kerala Police, along with the Dog Squad, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS), and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officials, are collecting evidence from the incident site in Kasargod.

"On this occasion, a lot of people gathered. During Thottam, the fireworks started and a fireball fell after which people started running and panicking," said Babu, relative of one of the deceased.

Case registered against 8 temple committee members under non-bailable sections for conducting fireworks without permission and violating guidelines. The FIR states that the careless display led to a fire in the fireworks storage area.

Over 150 people were injured, including eight seriously, in a fireworks accident during a temple festival near Neeleswaram late Monday, police reported. The injured were taken to hospitals in Kasargod, Kannur, and Mangaluru, they added.

“Winds play an important role in dispersion of pollutants in the absence of any significant weather activity like rain, which washes them out. The average wind speed during the daytime on Monday was 15-18 kmph,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice chairman, Skymet Meteorology.
