Kashmir remains in grip of cold weather, light snowfall predicted for weekend

Kashmir Valley remained under the grip of intense cold on Friday, with minimum temperatures plunging several degrees below freezing, officials reported. Light snowfall, particularly in the higher reaches, is anticipated starting Saturday, they added. Clear skies have led to sub-zero night temperatures across the valley, with the mercury consistently dropping well below freezing.
Officials noted that most areas in Kashmir have enjoyed clear skies and bright sunshine during the day over the past few days, a factor contributing to the sharp decline in nighttime temperatures. In Srinagar, the minimum temperature settled at minus 4.3 degrees Celsius, a marginal rise from the previous night's minus 4.4 degrees, they said.

Cold conditions continued in several regions of Rajasthan, with Karauli recording the lowest temperature at 3.3 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Centre Jaipur has indicated that a new western disturbance may bring rain to some parts of the state on January 10 and 11. As a result, both minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees over the next 24 hours.

Delhi Weather Live: Severe fog disrupts Northern Railway operations

On Friday morning, approximately 26 trains in the Northern Railway region are facing delays due to poor visibility and other operational challenges. These delays range from over an hour to more than eight hours. Notable affected trains include the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express (12565), delayed by 1 hour and 65 minutes, and the Farakka Express (15743), which is running late by 1 hour and 37 minutes. The Mahabodhi Express (12397) is delayed by 2 hours and 28 minutes, and the Gorakh Dham Express (12555) is running 1 hour and 73 minutes behind schedule. Other delayed trains include the Prayagraj Express (12417), delayed by 185 minutes, and the Shramjeevi Express (12391), which is running 111 minutes late. The Padmavat Express (14207) is also delayed by 69 minutes. Rail operations have been affected by severe weather conditions, particularly dense fog, over the past few days.

Dense fog, cold wave persist in Punjab & Haryana, visibility severely reduced

Cold to severe cold conditions were observed in isolated pockets of Punjab and Haryana on Thursday. Dense fog with visibility of less than 50 metres was reported in some parts of Punjab. In isolated pockets of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, dense fog with visibility up to 200 metres was observed. Zero visibility was reported in Amritsar and Pathankot, 10 metres in Patiala, 20 in Ludhiana, and 40 metres in Ambala and Karnal. AQI deteriorates in NCR, GRAP III kicks in yet again

A ban on construction and demolition and restriction on the movement of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and GB came into force with immediate effect on Thursday after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)invoked stringent measures under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The capital's AQI rose to 393 in the higher end of the ‘very poor' category on Thursday, as opposed to as opposed to 297 in the poor range a day earlier. In Noida, air quality dipped to ‘poor' at 259 from 161 in the ‘moderate' category the day before. Greater Noida also witnessed a similar dip to ‘poor' from ‘moderate' with an AQI of 270, against 177 on Wednesday. Neighbouring Ghaziabad saw the most drastic deterioration in air quality of the three, with AQI slipping to the ‘very poor' category at 332 from 198 the day before. Read more

Study finds 22 Haryana cities have PM10 levels above national standards; Gurgaon and Faridabad top list

The concentration of pollutant PM10 exceeded the maximum level considered safe in all 22 cities of Haryana where researchers carried out a study last year. Gurgaon and Faridabad were the most polluted, and Narnaul and Ambala the least in the group of 22, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). In Gurgaon, the study recorded average PM10 levels over 2024 at 186 µg/m³, more than three times the limit of 60 µg/m³ set by the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Faridabad, the only city in the state that has been tagged as ‘non-attainment' under the National Clean Air Programme, wasn't far behind, with an average of 171 µg/m³ PM10 levels. On 280 days of the year – 76.5% -- PM10 concentration in Faridabad exceeded the daily NAAQS limit. Read more

Cold intensifies in Rajasthan, 3°C in Fatehpur

Cold wave conditions continued across Rajasthan Thursday, with many places recording a dip in mercury. Fatehpur remained the coldest with a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. Attributing the continued dip in mercury to active northerly winds, the Met office said cloudy conditions are likely to prevail in Jaipur, Bharatpur, Bikaner, and Ajmer divisions in the coming days. People in Jaipur woke up to a chilly morning when a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius was recorded. It was followed by a bright sunny day with a maximum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. The Met office said that on Friday and Saturday, there is a possibility of mild to moderate showers, as with active western disturbances, the humidity levels are rising.

According to IMD, a western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Iran and its neighbourhood in the lower and middle tropospheric levels. Under its influence, light to moderate scattered rainfall is likely over the plains of northwest India from Jan 10-12. Thunderstorms are likely at isolated places over HP, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Jan 11. An isolated hailstorm is also likely over south Haryana on Jan 11. Minimum temperatures were reported at 1-4 degrees Celsius over isolated places in HP, Punjab, and Haryana, and 5-10 degrees over many parts of the northwest.
