Delhi pollution: Air quality 'severe', minimum temperature 15.9 deg C

Delhi woke up to hazardous air quality on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded in the "severe" category. The minimum temperature was 15.9°C, 1.8°C above the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per the 'Sameer App' of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI stood at 429 at 9 a.m., indicating severe pollution levels.

The IMD forecasts maximum and minimum temperatures of 29°C and 15°C, respectively, for Sunday.

According to the Decision Support System (DSS), transport was the largest contributor to Delhi’s local emissions on Saturday, accounting for 12.44% of the city’s PM2.5 levels. Jhajjar contributed 5.77%, Sonipat 4.3%, and Delhi’s residential units 3.5%.

According to CPCB, the PM2.5 levels oscillated between 215.5 to 263 micrograms per cubic metre, against national standards of 60 units and WHO’s 15 units for 24 hours. PM10 oscillated between 353 and 399.3 per cubic metre, against the national standard of 100 units and WHO’s 45 units.

Environment minister Gopal Rai, along with transport department officials, conducted a surprise inspection at ISBT Kashmere Gate on Saturday. Despite GRAP-III restrictions, they found BS-IV diesel buses from neighboring states entering Delhi, violating the ban on such vehicles.

Under GRAP-III, implemented by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday, BS-IV or lower diesel buses are prohibited from entering the city. Enforcement teams issued challans to buses belonging to the Haryana and Uttarakhand governments.

Rai accused BJP-led state governments of contributing to Delhi’s pollution, stating, “30% of Delhi’s pollution comes from local sources, while 70% is due to sources in NCR states.”
