Dara Shikoh’s library to get fresh lease of life

New Delhi: Before being killed in a battle of succession by his brother,

Dara Shikoh

, the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shahjahan, known as a man of intellectual pursuits, had established a library in 1637 near Kashmere Gate.

The books have long been lost, but the building stands even today. Last month, the Delhi chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) began work to restore the historic edifice to its former glory.

After the prince’s death, the library building changed hands several times. According to historian Swapna Liddle, it was given to Donna Juliana, the Portuguese governess of the royal Mughal children and the name behind Sarai Julena near Jamia Millia Islamia. It remained in her family till

Nawab Safdarjung

purchased it in mid-18th century.

After that, the building morphed into the first British residency occupied by Sir David Ochterlony and then in subsequent years into a government college, a municipal school, office of the state archaeology department and finally into an archaeological museum.

Liddle said that Ochterlony, after buying the building with personal funds, transformed it by incorporating European features while revamping the building. “The original fluted pillars and arches were covered over to produce a façade of pillars in the neoclassical style,” explained Liddle.

The building is unique for the mix of Mughal architectural features, such as baluster columns and scalloped arches, and colonial additions like the Roman pillars with Ionic capitals. “INTACH hopes to conserve this unique hybrid of architectural styles,” said Liddle. The series of columns and arches found on the lower level constitute what was perhaps the Qutub Khana, or library, which originally housed the books, most of which were destroyed after the events of 1857.

In 2011, the Sheila Dikshit government decided to convert the library into a city museum in collaboration with INTACH with “the intention of preserving and promoting cultural heritage”. The state archaeology department will display around 2,200 artefacts, including excavated coins, stones and other antiquities from ancient and medieval times.

The museum will also familiarise visitors with the history of the seven cities of Delhi.

I was elated to see the heading, but by the end I was sad.The fourth paragraph "AFTER that ...", skimped into the major portion of important history. The statement like government college, for the 1st Engineering College in Delhi by the name Delhi Polytechnic Engineering College, started in early 50's, later changed to Delhi College of Engineering & since 1998 to Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, was a sheer indifference to the elite institutions with professionals contributing to India's progress till today.Even the second part of the same statement "municipal school" has the similar implication. That municipal school originally was affiliated with the same engineering college, started in the early 50's, no connection with the municipality, had a name Delhi Polytechnic Technical Higher Secondary School. And the classes happened in those big historical rooms with three feet wide walls, atop the actual library who bears a name plate Shahjahan Qutab ...The important part of the history of this school is that it was only one of its kind in the whole of India. Students were admitted at 6th-grade & 9th-grade level via all India Basis Entrance test/interview in Delhi. In addition to the regular subjects in Science stream of Higher Secondary curriculum - PCM, English & Hindi, this school had workshops including fitting, sheet metal, foundry, machine shop, carpentry & electrical wiring spread over 6 years & Engineering Drawing for last 3 years. The graduating students would be getting admission in elite engineering institutions of that era, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, BIT Pilani etc. The fundamental technical education from this school at the early age added dynamism to the personality of the person, which helps in many situations during the lifetime. After 1961 batch graduation, this school changed to create more of skilled people training under the Diploma program of ITI scheme of Delhi Municipal Corporation and was not merely a school. In 3 years, the person graduating would be an earner for the family.I am sure, this addition as a comment or excerpts from this prose attached to the original article would be an additional depiction of the history.[My history, I am one of the students from 1961 batch, joined in 9th grade and last week I met another one from 1959 batch, who joined in 6th grade, he is visiting from India and actually forwarded me this article on Whatsapp. Another person from 1961 - Rakesh Kumar, may be Googled (at sdgmag)]
