NEW DELHI: A 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly concocting a false story about robbery of Rs 18 lakh here, police said on Tuesday. The accused was identified as Hemant Rao, a resident of New Ushmanpur, they added.

On Monday, police received a call regarding robbery of Rs 18 lakh at gunpoint at Shakarpur area, police said.


During investigation, the statement of employer of complainant Rao said that Rao was his collection agent and had collected approximately Rs 18 lakh in two days, a senior police officer said.

He further said that on Monday at around 2pm, he received a call from Rao that three unknown persons had robbed him at gunpoint, he added.

When police questioned Rao, he kept changing his version and later revealed the truth. He disclosed that he wanted to confiscate the collected money and concoct a false story of robbery, the officer said.

A total of Rs 17,95,000, a mobile phone, debit card and credit card were recovered from him, police said.
