The occupancy of Covid beds in Delhi’s

hospitals

, which reduced to less than 3,000 on July 30 and continued to be so till August 5, has again crossed the 3,000 mark.

From August 6 to August 12, data released by the Delhi government shows, occupancy of Covid beds has remained between 3,024 and 3,351. Dr Suresh Kumar, director of Lok Nayak hospital, told TOI that 43 Covid-19 patients were admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. “New admissions have increased significantly.”

Till last week, we were getting 20-30 patients daily,” Dr Suresh Kumar, director of Lok Nayak hospital, said. He added that increased mobility in Delhi-NCR is responsible for this.

The doctors at Sir Ganga Ram, Indraprastha Apollo and Max hospitals also confirmed the trend. “There is a significant increase in new admissions due to Covid-19. Many of the patients are also from other states, for example Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar,” one of the doctors at Apollo hospital said.

On Wednesday, Delhi recorded 1,113 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally in the city to over 1.48 lakh. Eleven fresh fatalities were recorded in the state due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, officials said, adding that the total number of fatalities has reached 4,153.

According to the state health department, 3,351 (24%) out of 13,963 Covid beds were occupied, as on Wednesday. The occupancy rate of Covid Care Centres and Covid Health Centres stood at 7% and 32%, respectively. At Lok Nayak hospital, which is the largest Covid designated hospital in the state, 336 patients with Covid-19 are admitted. AIIMS-Delhi has 142 Covid-19 patients admitted, officials said. “There has been a significant increase in admissions due to Covid-19 over the last 3 to 4 days,” the doctors at AIIMS said.

The demand for ICU beds with and without ventilator support has also gone up, shows data shared by the hospitals. There are 1,235 Covid beds with ventilators in Delhi. Of this, data shows, 415 (34%) were occupied on Wednesday.

Of the 881 Covid beds without ventilators, 297 (34%) were occupied. Max Smart, Saket, Indraprastha Apollo, Max Patparganj, BLK Super Specialty, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Aakash Healthcare, Sri Balaji Action, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre and Moolchand hospital among others did not have any ICU bed with ventilator available at 10 pm, according real time update on status of beds updated on the Delhi Corona App. “People need to follow social distancing measures and wear masks at all times when they go out to prevent another crisis situation,” doctors say.
