NEW DELHI: After winning the Nobel Prize for economics,

Abhijit Banerjee

had said during an interaction that JNU had taught him what India was all about. And on the day after that university came under attack, the upset economist expressed his anger and said in JNU violence, he heard echoes of Germany moving towards

Nazi rule

.

Banerjee asked the government to “establish the truth” of what happened on the campus of the university on Sunday evening. Talking to the media, he said every Indian should be worried over the attack on JNU. “I think any Indian who cares about the nation’s image in the world should worry,” he told a news channel. The government must not let the truth “get drowned in the chorus of counter-accusations,” Banerjee said while asked for a comment on the statement of the JNU registrar, who had blamed students protesting against hostel fee hike for the violence. The students and teachers on JNU campus, however, said that they came under attack by a group of masked people. Left organisations claimed that the ABVP was behind the attack and the latter claimed that it was orchestrated by the Leftists.

“I am really concerned about those who were injured. I wish everyone injured a speedy recovery,” the economist told the news channel. In 1983, as a postgraduate student of the same university, he himself had faced police action. He had been sent to Tihar jail and charged with attempt to murder.
