NEW DELHI: Former chief election commissioner Navin Chawla, who served from 2009 to 2010, passed away at age 79 on Saturday at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi following brain surgery complications.

Former CEC SY Quraishi said that he had met Chawla about 10 days ago, when Chawla informed him about his upcoming brain surgery admission.

"He passed away this morning at Apollo Hospital," Quraishi said, adding that Chawla was cheerful during their last meeting.

"Sad to know about passing on of Shri Navin Chawla, former Chief Election Commissioner of India. May his soul rest in peace," Quraishi wrote on X.

An Election Commission functionary also confirmed the news of Chawla's death.

Chawla, who had a background in bureaucracy, served as election commissioner from 2005 to 2009 before taking on the role of chief election commissioner until July 2010.
