Gang Targeting Phones Of DU Students Busted
New Delhi: In the heart of Delhi University, a gang of five boys roamed the streets, preying on unsuspecting young students. Their modus operandi was swift and ruthless. They would zoom in on their targets on a yellow Karizma motorcycle, snatch their valuables and vanish into thin air, often leaving the target injured. The gang's reign of terror finally ended when they targeted a 19-year-old student of Kirori Mal College recently. The student's complaint led to the formation of a police team that analysed CCTV footage and tracked down the suspects. Police charged the suspects under section 112 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with petty organised crime. The section, which was not there in the erstwhile IPC, was invoked due to the repeated nature of offences and the organised manner of operations."The breakthrough came when two suspicious individuals, Mohammed Faizan and Mohammed Saqib, were spotted on the yellow Karizma bike near Malkaganj Chowk. Upon interrogation, Faizan revealed that he, along with Rafiq, committed the snatching. Police soon arrested Rafiq, Nooruddin, the receiver of stolen phones, and Kasim, the motorcycle owner who provided his bike for snatching, too," said DCP (North) Raja Banthia. The accused were charged under various sections, and their profiles revealed a history of involvement in robbery, snatching and theft. The recovered items included five mobile phones and the motorcycle. The gang operated primarily in north Delhi, targeting students and pedestrians during evening hours. The accused had a well-established modus operandi where they would identify vulnerable targets near educational institutions and metro stations. The recovered motorcycle was found to have a tampered number plate. Kasim would regularly change the number plates to avoid detection by CCTV cameras. Nooruddin told cops he used to sell the stolen phones through his network of small shops in Nawabganj after changing their IMEI numbers. The accused were remanded to judicial custody.
