Gang that smuggled stolen phones to Nepal and Bangladesh busted

New Delhi: With the arrest of a 20-year-old, police claimed to have busted a syndicate smuggling stolen mobile phones to neighbouring countries. After nabbing suspect Suraj Kumar, a resident of Lahori Gate, 74 high-end mobiles were recovered on Thursday, police said.“We have found that the users of stolen mobiles, especially the coveted iPhones, were receiving phishing messages from Nepal and Bangladesh, seeking lock codes and Apple IDs,” a senior police officer said.“In response, various teams were deployed at various bus stands and railway stations, hotspots for dispatching illicit parcels to neighbouring countries,” said Manoj Kumar Meena, DCP (North), adding that a tip-off was received about a suspect attempting to book a parcel on the Nepal-bound bus.Subsequently, a trap was set up near Gokhale Market and Suraj was arrested. During interrogation, the suspect disclosed that after a stint behind bars he went to his native village in Bihar where he forged connections in various districts of Nepal and came up with the idea of funnelling stolen mobiles across borders.Returning to Delhi, Suraj “purchased stolen phones, broke their locks, and then couriered them to his contacts in different districts of Nepal in order to avoid recovery of mobile phone by local police,” added Meena.
