Hydrogen-powered buses to become operational in Central Vista area

New Delhi: Two hydrogen-powered shuttle buses will run in the Central Vista area from Friday onwards to encourage people to use public transport.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in collaboration with the ministry of housing and urban affairs and ministry of petroleum and natural gas will launch this service. “The initiative aims to provide seamless last-mile connectivity between Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth metro stations and govt offices in the Central Vista,” said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC.
Officials said each bus can seat 35 passengers, is equipped with GPS-based tracking and CCTV systems. The service will operate from Monday to Friday, excluding gazetted holidays, during peak office hours . These would be from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm.
The frequency of each bus will be 30 minutes. One bus will operate in the clockwise direction and the other in the anti-clockwise direction, covering Kartavya Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Akbar Road, Baroda House, National Stadium, National Gallery of Modern Arts, India Gate, Seva Teerth metro station as well as seeral other offices and landmarks.
Fare collection will be through the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), UPI, and cash with an affordable stage-wise ticket pricing of Rs 10 and Rs 15.
DMRC will oversee the operations, conductors, ticketing and passenger support, while IOCL will provide drivers and the hydrogen fuel support.
“This pioneering initiative underscores the Centre’s commitment to green mobility, clean energy adoption and sustainable public transport infrastructure. The project is expected to serve as a benchmark for future hydrogen-based transportation systems across the country,” Dayal said.
