LPG Crisis Live Updates: Pricing could become a major concern if situation persists beyond April, Kotak Mahindra

Anindya Banerjee, vice president at Kotak Mahindra Securities, on Wednesday said that while country's LPG supplies remain largely secure, natural gas availability and pricing could become a major concern if the crisis persists beyond April. Speaking to ANI, Banerjee outlined the current situation across LPG, CNG, and PNG segments, highlighting that LPG is relatively stable due to diversified sourcing and existing buffers. "As far as the LPG is concerned, we have a leverage, we were importing close to half, 50 to 55 percent of our LPG needs but now what we are trying to do is we have asked the oil marketing companies to increase the output... we already have an inventory... we are importing a lot of gas through the Red Sea, which is the Yanbu portal of Saudi Arabia. We are doing some imports from Oman. Some tankers or some LPG tankers have been cleared through the Hormuz. So LPG won't become an issue," he said. However, he flagged natural gas as the key area of concern, particularly due to supply risks linked to geopolitical tensions affecting major routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: 12.5K PNG connections in 7 Assam dists by June

Amid concerns over the evolving LPG supply situation due to the conflict in West Asia, the Assam government has announced plans to provide around 12,500 new piped natural gas (PNG) connections by June in areas where infrastructure is already in place across seven districts.

The food, public distribution and consumer affairs department on Wednesday issued a public notice for the rollout across nearly 64 locations in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Sonitpur districts.

The decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota with the managing directors and CEOs of Assam Gas Company Ltd, Purba Bharati Gas Pvt. Ltd and North East Gas Distribution Company Ltd, the agencies implementing PNG projects in the state.

The chief secretary said consumers in the notified localities can apply through the QR codes provided in the public notice or contact the agencies directly, including via the toll-free helpline, to obtain a connection.

"The initiative aims to provide a safe, cost-effective, and uninterrupted alternative to LPG while enhancing energy security and ease of living," he added.

Under the plan, PBGPL will provide 6,000 connections in Guwahati, NEGDCL will roll out 1,500 in Tezpur in Sonitpur district, and AGCL will provide 5,000 connections across Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Golaghat districts.

PBGPL CEO Ripunjay Phukan said, "The target has been set to provide the connections by June. Efforts are being put in. Consumers have to follow certain formalities including depositing security deposits for the connections."

PBGPL currently has 180 PNG connections in Guwahati’s Geetanagar area, which were inaugurated by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma over a year ago. The company also has around 2,500 connections in Silchar.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: CM Siddaramaiah requests adequate allocation of LPG to Karnataka after arrival of two tankers

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, urging him to ensure adequate allocation and availability of commercial LPG and Auto LPG in the state.

The appeal comes as two Indian vessels, ‘Shivalik’ and ‘Nanda Devi’, arrived in Gujarat carrying over 90,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas.

Highlighting disruptions in LPG supply due to the West Asia conflict, Siddaramaiah said the state is currently able to supply only 1,000 cylinders per day against a demand of 50,000 from restaurants, hotels, catering units, and PG accommodations.

"As a result, there has been a visible increase in the shutting down of establishments due to the non-availability of commercial LPG. This is beginning to impact the students, IT professionals, farmers, dairy producers, along with a large section of the public who are dependent on the hospitality sector," Siddaramaiah said.

He also pointed out the absence of an integrated platform to monitor commercial LPG supplies, unlike the existing IT system used for tracking domestic gas distribution.

The Chief Minister further raised concerns about the lack of a similar system for Auto LPG distribution.

"Similarly, Auto LPG is a critical fuel for a large number of auto-rickshaws, which form an important part of the city's last-mile connectivity and support the livelihood of many drivers. However, there is no integrated system to monitor the distribution of Auto LPG, which leads to a lack of transparency and accountability," he said.

In a statewide crackdown on illegal storage and black marketing of LPG, police have seized 419 cylinders over the past few days, registered 14 FIRs, and arrested 21 people across multiple districts.

On Wednesday, four eateries in Patna were sealed for illegally using domestic LPG cylinders, and FIRs were lodged against those responsible.

“Acting on the directions of DGP Vinay Kumar, investigations, raids and enforcement of related laws have been intensified in all districts, with continuous monitoring at the police headquarters level. Simultaneously, cafes and restaurants are being inspected, and eateries found using domestic LPG cylinders illegally are being sealed. On Wednesday, four restaurants in areas including Kankarbagh, Patna City and Barh were sealed, and five FIRs were lodged for the illegal use of domestic cylinders,” Patna district magistrate Thiyagarajan S M said at a press conference.

The DM added that regular inspections of gas dealers and distributors are underway, and any involvement in black marketing or negligence would invite immediate arrest and prosecution under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

According to official data, the largest seizure was made in the Forbesganj police station area of Araria district, where 261 cylinders were recovered and two persons arrested. In Saharsa district, police registered an FIR after seizing 112 cylinders and identifying one accused.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Switch to PNG, get more LPG, Centre to states

The government on Wednesday proposed increasing the allocation of commercial LPG cylinders to 30% of their average requirement for states that encourage a switch to piped natural gas (PNG).

Amid a squeeze on LPG supplies caused by the conflict in West Asia, the government has prioritised domestic consumers and limited distribution to commercial entities to 20% of their average monthly consumption, after initially suspending supplies. At the same time, it is encouraging consumers in urban areas to switch to PNG by either activating dormant connections or applying for new ones.

The "incentive" for states suggests that some switch to piped gas has already taken place, freeing up capacity that can be used by restaurants and other commercial users, although the overall LPG situation was described as "worrisome" even on Tuesday.

Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal stated that he has written to states urging them to relax the norms around digging charges and lease rent levied by local bodies for laying gas pipelines.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: LPG shortage impacts commercial and essential services

The disruption in LPG imports from Saudi Arabia and the UAE has led to rationing, prioritizing household consumption over commercial use. This shortage is affecting multiple sectors: restaurants are removing slow-simmered dishes, brick and tile manufacturers, ceramics, and glass kilns are struggling, while essential services such as crematories, laundries, and hospital kitchens face operational difficulties.

Sharma said commercial LPG stocks have been placed with states to prioritize usage. So far, 15 states and UTs have issued LPG distribution guidelines. Additionally, states have received 48,000 kilolitres of extra kerosene to meet cooking and other needs, with 12 states having utilized this quota. She assured that India remains self-sufficient in petrol and diesel and has adequate jet fuel (ATF) supplies.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Commercial users offered incentives for PNG adoption

As the LPG supply crunch stretches into its third week, the central government announced plans to increase commercial LPG allocation for states that accelerate the rollout of piped natural gas (PNG). Supplies to commercial establishments, including hotels, were initially cut off and later restored to 20% of requirements. Now, states that fast-track piped gas connections could receive up to 30% of their commercial LPG quota.

Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, advised: "LPG users should shift to PNG wherever there is a city gas distribution (CGD) network nearby."

She also added that the ministry has offered additional commercial LPG allocations to states that grant deemed permissions, cut annual rental or lease charges, and implement dig-and-restore schemes for pipeline laying. Sharma confirmed that LPG is not dry anywhere in the country but acknowledged the situation remains worrisome due to blocked imports from West Asia.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Restaurant body seeks relief from Maharashtra govt amid LPG shortage

The Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) – HRAWI has urged the Maharashtra government to grant an extension or allow staggered payment of the annual licence fee, citing a commercial LPG shortage that has forced several hospitality establishments to shut down.

On Tuesday, HRAWI submitted a representation to Sunetra Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for State Excise, requesting a one-month extension of the license fee payment deadline, moving it from March 31 to April 30, according to news agency PTI.

The association also proposed a staggered payment mechanism, allowing the annual license fee to be paid in four quarterly instalments by March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31.

"The situation on the ground remains critical, with approximately 30 to 35 per cent of hotels and restaurants currently shut, owing to a near complete halt in the LPG supply from distributors," HRAWI said.

Establishments that continue to operate are doing so under curtailed hours and restricted menus, optimising fuel usage to sustain operations, it observed.

"However, many of these establishments may also be forced to shut down within the next 2 to 3 days if supplies are not restored.

"At this critical juncture, we urge the government to provide immediate relief by granting an extension or permitting staggered payment of the annual license fee. Such support will go a long way in helping the industry navigate this liquidity crunch," HRAWI spokesperson Pradeep Shetty said.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Amid LPG crisis, tea sellers switch to electric stoves in Bhubaneswar

What has turned into a battle for survival, hundreds of OMFED parlours and independent tea kiosks across the city have begun switching to electric stoves as the ongoing LPG shortage, triggered by the West Asia conflict, continues to disrupt daily business. Many tea stall owners, who usually consume at least one cylinder every week, say they have no choice but to adopt alternatives to stay afloat. With LPG refills now taking more than a month to arrive, several popular outlets that still have access to cylinders have nearly doubled the price of a cup of tea, frustrating customers.

“We cannot run ourshop without fuel, and LPGis just not available. Electric stoves are slower, butat least we can continueserving tea. Earlier, I usedone cylinder every six days. Now it has been 15 dayssince my last refill request. So switching to electricwas the only option left,” said Bulu Mohanty, an OMFED parlour operator at Laxmi Vihar.

However, for small roadside tiffin stalls selling items such as samosa, bara, and aloo chop, switching to electricity is not practical, they say. Many have instead reverted to charcoal stoves, which they had stopped using for years due to convenience, smoke-related issues, and rules imposed by the local civic body.

“For frying items, electric stoves are useless. They take too long, and theheat isn’t enough. So weshifted to charcoal. It isharder to manage, after allthose years of easy gas-based cooking, but at least wecan cook and continue ourbusiness now,” said Sabitri Das, who runs a small tiffin stall in Old Town.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Gas supply disruption halts over 400 ceramic units in Gujarat's Morbi for 3 weeks

As many as 430 ceramic units in Gujarat's Morbi will remain closed for at least three weeks as the West Asia conflict has disrupted the supply of gas required for manufacturing, an industry representative said.

In Morbi, known as the ceramic city and the world's second-largest hub for ceramic tile production, nearly 450 out of the total 670 factories have already halted operations due to the gas shortage, with more likely to shut down in the coming days, officials added.

The ceramic industry depends heavily on propane or natural gas, particularly for firing kilns and drying processes, according to news agency PTI.

The West Asian region has been experiencing military turmoil, with US and Israeli forces engaging in a war against Iran, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping passage.

"A special meeting of ceramic units operating at Morbi in Gujarat was convened on Tuesday, where the owners of around 430 units engaged in consultations regarding the gas crisis and ancillary issues, and collectively decided to shut down their factories," Morbi Ceramic Manufacturing Association president Manoj Arvadiya said.

The ceramic units that use propane gas were the first to halt operations as their supply ran out. Later, those dependent on natural gas also stopped functioning, he noted.

"Now, around 430 such units have collectively decided not to operate till April 10-15 and use the period for maintenance of their machines. They will together begin operations subject to the availability of the new supply of gas," Arvadiya said.

The voluntary, collective decision taken by the association members during the meeting entails a shutdown period of 20 to 25 days, he added.

The entire situation depends on the resolution of the conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel, and the restoration of the regular gas supply.

As the West Asia conflict raises concerns over global fuel supply and LPG availability, authorities in Gujarat have stepped up vigilance against black marketeering and illegal handling of domestic gas cylinders. A series of cases in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Bharuch highlight how fears over global disruptions are leading to violations.

In Ahmedabad, Bodakdev police registered a case against a 50-year-old man for alleged illegal refilling of domestic LPG cylinders in Thaltej, endangering lives and violating provisions of the Essential Commodities Act. The complaint was filed late on Monday by a head constable after a tip-off.

A joint team of police and government officials reached Bharwadvas in Thaltej around 5.15 pm and found the accused near an autorickshaw allegedly refilling smaller cylinders from larger ones using a metal pipe without any safety measures. Officials recovered seven domestic LPG cylinders, a weighing scale, and delivery receipts. Several cylinders were found underweight, indicating that gas had been siphoned off.

The accused is said to have admitted to selling gas from filled cylinders for personal gain. Police said the cylinders were meant for delivery to customers, but gas was being illegally extracted before distribution. All items, including cylinders, refilling tools, and the autorickshaw, were seized.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Bhopal travels back in time with wood, diesel ovens

A shortage of gas cylinders has compelled residents across the city-from teeming markets to serene households-to revert to age-old cooking traditions, sparking a nostalgic revival amid modern woes.

Commercial cylinders became available in the city starting Monday; however, by then, people in many places had already found new alternatives to keep their operations running.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Madhya Pradesh targets and efforts to improve PNG supply

The Union government has stated that Madhya Pradesh aims to achieve about 65.22 lakh domestic PNG connections by 2031. However, progress has been slow, with half of the districts yet to start work on providing piped gas connections, and those that have begun lagging significantly behind targets.

City gas distribution companies, authorised by the petroleum and natural gas regulatory board, have been given supply contracts for 2–3 or more adjoining cities, and their connections are key to meeting the state’s domestic PNG targets.

Unlike LPG, which relies on trucks and bottling plants and often faces disruptions due to panic-buying, PNG flows directly through underground pipelines. Recognising this need, the government has directed all district collectors to encourage more consumers to connect with the piped gas system.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Low PNG coverage in Madhya Pradesh highlights LPG shortfall concerns

Bhopal and other cities in Madhya Pradesh have come under focus due to low coverage of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) amid the ongoing LPG crunch caused by the military conflict in West Asia and its impact on Gulf oil fields.

According to the Union government, MP currently ranks eighth among all states and UTs in terms of PNG connections. Experts have opined that better coverage of piped gas could have helped the state meet the perceived LPG shortfall and supply stress.

A separate data set from the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas identified Bhopal as a laggard in PNG connections, trailing other cities like Indore, Ujjain, and Gwalior. Indore, including Ujjain, topped the state with 1,23,804 connections till May 31, 2025, followed by Gwalior with 63,150 connections, while Bhopal and Rajgarh combined had only 39,373 connections. Overall, the state provided just 2,93,572 domestic PNG connections till May last year, falling far short of its target of 6,22,825 connections.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Police lathi-charge over LPG stir in Mumbai, says RWIP

Tensions flared in Mankhurd after members of the Revolutionary Workers’ Party of India alleged police high-handedness during a protest over LPG shortage at Samvidhan Chowk, and a lathi-charge. A senior police officer denied any lathi-charge, and said it was “a petty protest”.

According to the party, the police had refused to accept their permission letter for the protest without providing a reason. Despite this, party members gathered on Tuesday evening. RWPI claimed several activists, including Baban, Dhananjay and Talib, were detained around 5:30 pm even before the protest began.

By 6 pm, police allegedly said they would be released only after an FIR was registered, prompting supporters to gather outside Mankhurd police station. The situation escalated later in the evening, with the party alleging that police resorted to a lathi-charge between 7:30 pm and 8:15 pm. RWPI claimed a minor boy and a pregnant woman were assaulted, with the latter taken to a hospital.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Karnataka high court seeks supply clarity

The Karnataka high court on Tuesday directed the central and state governments to clarify by March 23 the allocation, stock, and other aspects of commercial LPG cylinder supply to Karnataka.

Justice Sachin Shankar Magadum gave this direction after hearing a petition filed by the Bangalore Hotels’ Association and others seeking uninterrupted supply of commercial LPG cylinders to hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru.

The petitioners claimed the abrupt action of authorities in halting supply of commercial LPG cylinders was arbitrary. K Sathish, counsel for the petitioners, submitted the decision to allocate 1,000 commercial LPG cylinders to the state does not meet its requirements, as Bengaluru city alone has about 40,000 hotels and restaurants. The court was further informed that around 6 lakh people working in these hotels are affected as some eateries have had to down shutters.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Gurgaon gets NCR's first LPG vending machine

Gurgaon has become the first city in NCR to get an LPG ATM — a smart vending machine that dispenses lightweight, fibre-based composite cylinders in just two to three minutes.

Installed at Central Park Flower Valley in Sector 33 of Sohna, the machine allows registered Bharatgas users to refill cylinders through a fully automated, contactless process using OTP verification and digital payment via UPI or debit card. Each cylinder weighs around 15kg, is dust-free and corrosion-free, and its transparent body lets users check the gas level easily.

The ATM can hold 10 cylinders at a time, automatically alerting the nearest gas agency when stock falls to two. Residents praised the 24x7 access and convenience, while BPCL officials said the rollout is part of a pilot to test automated dispensing and improve refill efficiency, and the facility will continue even after the current supply shortage eases.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live: Increased commercial interest

Officials said commercial establishments have also shown heightened interest in PNG. Queries from businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and small industries have increased sharply recently, from about 20 per week to nearly 140 per week. This indicates that commercial users are actively exploring PNG as an alternative to conventional fuel sources, possibly in response to LPG supply concerns and rising operational efficiency needs. IGL’s scaling up of installation capacity ensures that commercial consumers can be accommodated quickly, highlighting a strategic focus on both residential and commercial segments to meet growing energy demands.

LPG Gas Crisis in India Live Updates: As the LPG supply squeeze stretches into its third week, the central government has announced measures to increase commercial LPG supplies for states that accelerate piped natural gas rollout. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said, “LPG users should shift to PNG wherever there is a city gas distribution (CGD) network nearby.”

With imports from West Asia blocked, household LPG supplies continue, while commercial allocations have been selectively restored. Oil Secretary Neeraj Mittal urged states to reduce charges, expedite approvals, and implement reforms to attract CGD investment, citing that easing costs could bridge the gap between 1.6 crore existing piped connections and the target of 12.63 crore.

States implementing reforms, such as forming approval panels, granting deemed permissions, introducing Dig and Restore schemes, and reducing rental/lease charges, can receive additional commercial LPG allocations of up to 10%.

The shortage has affected restaurants, industries, and essential services, while 15 states and UTs have issued guidelines for prioritising commercial LPG usage. Twelve states have utilised additional kerosene allocations to meet cooking and other needs. Meanwhile, India remains self-sufficient in petrol, diesel, and jet fuel.
