India LPG Cylinder Shortage News Live Updates: Highlights
India is witnessing a surge in domestic LPG production, ramped up by 36% in two weeks, but supply concerns persist. Officials urge consumers to shift to piped natural gas (PNG), with incentives such as free gas and waived charges by Indraprastha Gas, Mahanagar Gas, and Bharat Petroleum. The supply crunch is compounded by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for LPG and crude imports from West Asia, which accounts for majority of India’s crude, gas, and LPG imports.Recent shipments include the Indian-flagged Shivalik and Nanda Devi LPG tankers, and the crude tanker Jag Laadki from UAE, ensuring critical energy supplies. In Karnataka, the priority-based allocation plan has created pressure on the hotel sector, with only 1,000 cylinders available daily for over 100,000 eateries, as hospitals and educational institutions receive top priority. The ongoing shortage has triggered black marketing in Hyderabad, with 19-kg commercial cylinders selling for Rs 4,000–7,000, compared to the official Rs 1,800. Restaurateurs report prices rising sharply in recent days. Stay with TOI for more updates:
