NEW DELHI: Former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal is set to take over as the chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University. JNU officials confirmed the appointment but said the official order was awaited. According to government sources, the Centre will announce the appointment soon.
A career diplomat, Sibal will take over from Vijay Kumar Saraswat, who is a member of Niti Aayog.
Following the news, greetings started pouring in on social media. JNU professor Amitabh Mattoo wrote on X, "Excellent choice. Ambassador Kanwal Sibal to be the new chancellor of JNU. Congratulations sir."
Sibal was born on November 18, 1943, to noted lawyer Hira Lal Sibal. He holds an MA degree in English literature and a bachelor's degree in law.
He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1966 and served in Paris, Dar es Salaam, Lisbon and Kathmandu. He was the joint secretary (administration/West Europe) in the ministry of external affairs, and India's ambassador to Turkey, Egypt, France and Russia, and the deputy chief of mission in Washington.
