Karawal Nagar gets ₹138-crore sewer project
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP president and Union minister of state Harsh Malhotra on Sunday announced a ₹138-crore sewer infrastructure project for Karawal Nagar, saying the initiative would address long-standing civic issues in several northeast Delhi localities.
The announcement was made at a public meeting organised to mark 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led govt at the Centre. The project will cover areas including Sonia Vihar, Milan Garden, Chauhan Patti and Sabhapur Extension, where residents have faced persistent problems related to sewerage and drainage.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said Delhi govt has approved development projects worth more than ₹300 crore in the Karawal Nagar Assembly constituency over the past year through the Chief Minister’s Development Fund, MLA Fund and the Yamuna Paar Development Board.
She said work on the new sewer network has commenced and will be accompanied by the replacement of old water pipelines, mechanised cleaning of aging sewer systems and measures to improve drinking water supply. The CM added that govt is working on a priority basis to tackle issues of waterlogging and inadequate civic infrastructure in the area.
Gupta also highlighted other welfare and development initiatives, stating that three Atal Canteens have already been opened in the constituency while three Arogya Mandirs have been approved to strengthen healthcare services.
Harsh Malhotra said the Centre had continued to invest in Delhi’s development despite BJP remaining in opposition in the city for most of the past decade. He cited major infrastructure projects, including metro expansion, road development and the Delhi–Meerut rail corridor, as examples of the Centre’s contribution to the capital.
Malhotra also said significant progress had been made in improving the condition of the Yamuna stretch between Sonia Vihar and Wazirabad alongside efforts to strengthen sewer infrastructure in the region.
