"Delhi is the capital of the country and it is important that everyone feels welcome in our city. It is equally important that no one sleeps hungry be it a Delhiite or anyone else. Therefore, the party intends to launch community kitchens similar to our Re 1 Jan Rasois throughout the city by converting dhalao ghars (garbage storage units)," he said.

Gambhir is running Jan Rasois for poor in East Delhi at four places, including Gandhi Nagar, New Ashok Nagar, Vinod Nagar and Shakarpur, where Rs 1 thali is being given to poor everyday.

"This will not only contribute towards cleanliness in Delhi but will also make sure that the poorest of the poor get healthy, nutritious & hygienic food at Re 1 per plate. MCD is meant to serve the people directly," he said.

Meanwhile, the BJP manifesto released recently also promises that the civic body would set up 50 Annapurna Rasois in Delhi run by women in which citizens would get food for Rs 5.

The party had in its 2017 manifesto said that Deendayal Antyodaya Rasoi Yojana will be launched to feed the weaker section of the society. In this scheme, a thali was promised for Rs 10. It was eventually launched after BJP came to power, but the scheme fizzled out within six months of launch.

A former BJP councillor said, "Launched at four places then, the scheme was stopped in six months time due to dispute with vendors at some places over location preference or not getting large crowds to sustain the project."

"The corporation again tried to launch it by working out the modalities, but then Covid came and later the bureaucratic delays in forming guidelines led to it not being launched," he said.

The elections to Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be held on December 4 and the counting of votes will take place on December 7. BJP has been in power in MCD for three straight terms.
