NEW DELHI: Rubbishing reports that she might be the Congress candidate against chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat,
Nirbhaya
’s mother
Asha Devi
on Friday said she had no interest in joining politics.
Delhi Congress campaign committee chairman Kirti Azad had earlier hinted in a Tweet that Asha Devi may join the grand old party. “Ae Ma tujhe salaam! Asha Devi ji aapka swagat hai (Hey Mother, I salute you! You are welcome Asha Devi),” the tweet said.
Asha Devi said she only wants the Nirbhaya case convicts to be hanged. “I have no interest in politics. I have not spoken to anyone in Congress. I only want justice for my daughter and execution of the convicts. Mera politics se door door tak koi naata nahi hai (I have no connection with politics),” she told reporters.
Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath said that the news reports were wrong and that the family had no interest in politics.
Azad told TOI that he quoted a tweet of a journalist that said that Nirbhaya’s mother could be Congress’ candidate from New Delhi. “I just trusted the information put out on Twitter and retweeted it with my comment,” he said, adding that there was no discussion in the party on the issue.
Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra tweeted in Hindi: “Everybody is welcome in Congress. But in an
election
environment, if there is any unconfirmed news related to the distribution of tickets, I want to make it clear that I did not have any talk with anyone in this regard.”
Nirbhaya, a 23-year-old paramedic, was gang-raped and killed in December 2012. Delhi Police later arrested six people, including a juvenile, for the crime. While one accused committed suicide in jail, four were awarded death sentence.
