‘Party will decide’: BJP’s Parvesh Verma on Delhi CM face after big win against Arvind Kejriwal

NEW DELHI: A surprise development in the Delhi Assembly elections saw BJP’s Parvesh Verma clinch the New Delhi constituency by outpacing AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal by 4089 votes. Verma’s total reached 30,088 compared to Kejriwal’s 25,999, a result that has significantly shaken up Delhi’s political scene.



When asked about the chief minister candidate, Verma commented, "In our party, the legislative party decides (CM's face) and then the party leadership approves it. So the party's decision will be acceptable to everyone."

He further stated, "I thank the voters of New Delhi, lakhs of hard-working workers and PM Narendra Modi. This is truly his victory. People have expressed their trust in him... Our priority will be to give Rs 2500 to women, create SIT to investigate corruption, Yamuna riverfront, reduce pollution, reduce traffic congestion; we will build a capital that everyone will take pride in."

A major blow for AAP

With Kejriwal and AAP aiming for a third consecutive term, their hopes have been dashed. By 1pm, BJP was leading in 48 out of Delhi's 70 Assembly seats, while AAP trailed with only 22.

Kejriwal, whose campaign was overshadowed by an image crisis tied to the alleged liquor excise policy scam, also faced mounting criticism from both the BJP and Congress over the state of Delhi’s infrastructure and the ongoing Yamuna water dispute.
