Yamuna Expressway: Top reasons behind accidents

Between 2012 and 2023, Yamuna Expressway witnessed a total of 7,625 road accidents, resulting in 1,320 fatalities and 11,168 injuries, as per information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) request from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). This averages out to 110 casualties annually since the expressway's inception.

The data reveals a staggering 3,364 accidents caused by drowsy driving, resulting in 522 fatalities and 4,181 injuries. These figures underscore the critical importance of prioritizing rest and staying vigilant while driving, especially during long journeys.

Overspeeding

Overspeeding continues to be a leading cause of road accidents. In 1,304 reported cases, overspeeding resulted in 201 fatalities and 1,819 injuries. These figures emphasize the importance of adhering to speed limits and exercising caution, especially in adverse weather conditions or congested areas where reduced visibility and reaction time exacerbate risks.

Negligent driving and other factors

Negligence on the part of drivers, coupled with various other contributing factors, continues to fuel road accidents. In 1,338 reported incidents falling under this category, 293 fatalities were recorded alongside 2,642 injuries.

Tyre burst

Despite advances in tyre technology, unexpected blowouts can lead to devastating consequences. In the reported data, tyre burst incidents resulted in 781 accidents, claiming the lives of 90 individuals and leaving 1,269 injured.

Dense fog

Navigating through dense fog presents unique challenges for drivers, often leading to tragic outcomes. The data reveals 338 accidents occurring under such conditions, resulting in 75 deaths and 665 injuries. These incidents highlight the necessity of employing appropriate safety measures such as reduced speed, headlights, and fog lights to enhance visibility and prevent collisions.

Drunken driving

The data reflects 266 accidents, resulting in 89 deaths and 393 injuries due to drunken driving. These sobering statistics emphasize the urgent need for responsible alcohol consumption and strict enforcement of penalties to deter individuals from driving under the influence.

​Mechanical fault

Malfunctioning vehicles pose a significant threat on the roads, often leading to accidents with dire consequences. In 136 reported incidents attributed to mechanical faults, 17 individuals lost their lives, while 162 sustained injuries. These numbers emphasize the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of mechanical issues to prevent potential disasters.

Pedestrian-related accidents

In 98 reported accidents involving pedestrians, 34 fatalities occurred, with 37 individuals sustaining injuries. These figures highlight the need for enhanced pedestrian infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and responsible driving behaviors to safeguard vulnerable road users.
