Why Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium (JLN) faces demolition — Inside the plan for a sports city

The Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in Delhi will be completely dismantled as part of a major redevelopment project. The plan envisions transforming the existing structure into a state-of-the-art Sports City that will serve as a hub for multiple sporting disciplines across India.

The new Sports City is being designed to include advanced infrastructure for athletes, spectators, and sports organizations. It will feature world-class training facilities, multipurpose arenas, and modern amenities aimed at fostering athletic excellence.

An essential feature of the new Sports City will be dedicated lodging for athletes. The goal is to create a holistic environment where sportspersons can train, stay, and compete within the same complex, ensuring convenience and efficiency.

The Sports City will occupy the same 102-acre area where the current Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium stands. The entire land parcel will be redeveloped, with new infrastructure replacing the decades-old stadium built for the 1982 Asian Games.

All offices currently functioning within the stadium premises, including the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), will be shifted to alternative locations before the dismantling begins.

Officials are studying successful global examples such as Qatar’s Aspire Zone and Australia’s Sports Cities. These models are being reviewed to finalize the design, operations, and functionality of India’s own sports hub.

Officials aim to incorporate eco-friendly and energy-efficient features into the new complex. The Sports City will prioritize green building practices, waste management, and renewable energy sources to meet global standards.

The Sports City project represents a major step toward modernizing India’s sports infrastructure. It is expected to elevate Delhi’s status as a leading center for international sports events and athlete development.

The redevelopment plan is still at the proposal stage, and authorities have not yet decided on the project’s timeline. Key details, including budget allocation and tendering, will be determined after the feasibility assessment.

Once completed, the Sports City is expected to serve as a lasting legacy of India’s growing sporting ambitions. It will not only host national and international tournaments but also nurture future champions in a world-class environment.
