GURGAON: Two elderly women - aged 75 and 60 years - were crushed to death by a goods train after they slipped off the edge of a platform and landed on the tracks at Faridabad railway station on Saturday morning.
While Ramkali (65) lost her balance and fell on the tracks, her sister-in-law Murthi Devi slipped trying to hold her hand, officers in govt railway police (GRP) said.
The two women - one from Jind and another from Panipat - had come to attend a family function in Faridabad on Friday. On Saturday morning, they were waiting on platform no 2 to catch Gita Jayanti Express back home. Murthi Devi's brother Shaymlal- a retired postmaster - was accompanying them.
The train, scheduled for 7.30am, was running 30 minutes late. Ramkali, who was anyway standing too close to the platform's edge to avoid the crowd, peered out when she heard an engine approaching.
"She didn't realise she had moved too close to the edge. Ramkali lost her balance and fell off the platform. As she fell, Murthi Devi tried reaching out to her, but she slipped too. Before they could get up and move away, a goods train crushed them down," said Vishwas Gehlot, GRP sub-inspector at Faridabad station.
"The platform was crowded at that time. Ramkali was standing near the edge to avoid the crowd. She was anyway anxious as the train was running late," he added.
A GRP team rushed to the spot to tackle the crowd and prevent another untoward incident. The mangled remains were removed from the tracks.
"The bodies were sent for an autopsy. They were handed over to their families in the evening on Saturday," the SI said. Shyamlal lodged a complaint, following which a general diary entry was made under Section 174 of CrPC.
