13.5 lakh vehicles on Goa roads, nearly 1 vehicle per person, says report

Panaji: Goa’s vehicle population surged to 13.5 lakh by the end of 2024, equating to approximately 0.8 vehicles for every person in the state. The majority of these vehicles are two-wheelers, with 8.6 lakh motorcycles and scooters on the road. With a projected population of 15.9 lakh for 2025, Goa’s vehicle density continues to rise, as per the Goa Economic Survey 2024-25.

In 2024-25 (up to Dec 31, 2024), a total of 23.3k driver’s licences were issued. From 2019-20 to 2023-24, the registration of vehicles under various categories saw a significant increase. Specifically, the category ‘motorcycle for hire’ grew by 44.8%, taxis increased by 69.9%, and buses/minibuses, including KTC, saw a growth of 62.7%.

As of Dec 31, 2024, the total number of valid permits issued includes various categories, such as contract carriage permits, goods permits, national permits, private service vehicle permits, stage carriage permits, and tourist permits, with a total of 61.3k valid permits.

The contract carriage permit holds the highest number of permits at 23.7k, followed by the all-India tourist permit at 18.6k. Private service vehicle permits have the least valid permits, totalling 624 permits.

The registration of electric vehicles in Goa saw a “tremendous increase” in 2023-24, with a total of 11k EVs registered that year. However, the transition to clean energy saw a drop the following year, as nearly half the amount of EVs were registered in 2024-25 (till Dec 2024), totalling 5k vehicles.

The transport department’s revenue collection over the last five years (as of Dec 31, 2024) was outlined in the economic survey. For the fiscal year 2024-25, the tentative revenue collection stands at approximately Rs 299.3 crore.
