Climate-resilient fishing village takes shape at Cacra, Arambol
Panaji: The directorate of fisheries has launched work on climate-resilient coastal fishing village projects at Cacra and Arambol, with solar-powered infrastructure, fish stock replenishment measures and digital weather alert systems planned under the initiative.
As part of the project, 60 solar lights are currently being installed — 40 at Cacra and 20 at Arambol — while solar dryers, market repairs, ramp upgrades and LED-based weather information systems are expected to be completed by Nov this year.
Deputy director of fisheries Chandrakant Velip said the initiative, titled Development of Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV), is being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
At Arambol, repairs of the fish market are under way along with installation of solar dryers and lights, while Cacra is witnessing ramp repairs and related infrastructure upgrades.
Superintendent of fisheries Megha Kerkar said the project focuses on renewable energy-based infrastructure, weather-warning systems and rescue support mechanisms to help fishing communities cope with climate-related challenges.
Under the programme, authorities will also undertake “sea ranching” by releasing fish seed into coastal waters to replenish fish stocks. Officials said the species are yet to be finalised, though riverine fish species are being considered.
The project further includes LED display systems providing weather alerts, warnings and potential fishing zone (PFZ) information sourced from the India Meteorological Department.
While weather alerts are already sent to fishermen via mobile phones, the new displays are aimed at improving visibility of advisories at fishing sites.
